The shape of Mountsfield Park today reveals the old 19th Century field boundaries.

This is how the area looked back then, before the railway arrived and London expanded South.

If you'd like to see it better, you can download a PDF of Mountsfield Park in 1865.

There's no South Circular of course, but George Lane is there, and you can make out what will become Hither Green Lane and Stainton Rd.

Mountsfield Park todayToday, the park is a welcome island of green in built-up South London. To the South, it is bounded by Brownhill Road (part of the South Circular) and to the East by Stainton Road.

The park offers tremendous views towards the South-West, Canary Wharf is easily seen to the North and you can just make out the London Eye and even the old Post-Office Tower behind Lewisham Hospital.
